Looks like government is getting into more business driven pseudoscience (cf. personality tests like the Myers-Briggs) by backing Voice Risk Analysis to detect benefit cheats. So, are lie detectors, and particularly voice stress recognition systems any good? Standard polygraphs (as administered by trained and experienced personnel) detect physiological signs associated with lying, although these can be absent in the truly psychopathic, you can learn to fool them, and anxiety can also produce them. Most studies of standard polygraphs are carried out on offenders, and they tend to find fairly high detection rates. Reported figures are typically of the order of a sensitivity (proportion of liars detected) of 76% and specificity (number of confirmed truth-tellers) of 63% (’average’ values), with 87% and 88% representing the upper range of estimates (’maximal’ values), which doesn’t sound too bad. But the utility of the polygraph (or any test in fact) very much depends on how likely it is that the suspect is guilty (the prevalence of true positives in the population) because if few people are guilty then even though only a small proportion of truth-tellers are falsely declared liars the large number of truth-tellers tested compared to the small number of liars means that most people reported as liars will actually be truth-tellers. Conversely, if most people you are testing are guilty (and thus liars) then even though a lot of guilty people will be detected, a lot of those declared innocent will actually be lying. To make that rather convoluted explanation a bit more concrete, I refer you to a rather famous paper by Brett et al (1986, Lancet) which used the figures above (the ‘average’ and ‘maximal’ values). They showed that when the prevalence of offenders in the population is assumed to be 5% (i.e. not many, such as with benefit cheats) there was a 10% positive predictive value, that is only 1 in 10 positive tests are actually lying, with the rest falsely accused (that is with the ‘average’ values, using the ‘maximal’ values they find 25% true positives). For a pre-test probability of 50% (e.g. criminal investigations, hopefully, maybe) the positive predictive value is 67% (88% with the ‘maximal’ values), a gain in certainty after the test of only 17%, with 33% of positive results still false positives. If most people are liars (90%) then the negative predictive value is only 23% with 77% of negative test results generated by lying subjects. It is often said that if you are innocent you probably don’t want to take the risk of being falsely labelled a liar, and thus a suspect, while it may be worth taking the chance if you’re guilty anyway, as it could throw them off the scent! So we know that polygraphs aren’t going to be that great at detecting liars in the population, even though they do work to some extent. There was a study done last year (Gamer et al 2006, Int J Psychophysiol) of polygraph measures (heart rate etc)* and voice stress recognition. It used the Guilty Knowledge Test (GKT):If, for example, a robbery of a fuel station is examined, a typical GKT-question could be:

The rules of my mission are that I should identify all lifeforms however, so recently I left an outside light on after dusk and was delighted to come back an hour later to find the moth seen in photo one (click to enlarge). From the characteristic lemon-yellow colouring and patches of brown on the costa (the leading edges of the wing), and using my copy of ‘Butterflies and Moths of Britain and Europe’ (Collins), I’m confident in my identifying my moth as the Brimstone Moth.My moth’s Latin name is Opisothograptis luteolata, which, by piecing together snippets of information from various sources, I believe translates as Opistho =backwards , graptis=graphics/writing , luteolata= yellowish : the yellow-with-backward-facing-graphical-symbols moth though I’m happy to be corrected. In an effort to learn more about moths I have been reading the excellent and scholarly ‘Moths’ (Michael Majerus, The New Naturalist series).

-ne Via NPR and The Daily GrailFor reasons that remain mostly mysterious, the note we call B flat does the oddest things. It turned out the culprit was B flat, one octave below middle C.The experiment was described back in the 1940s.I repeated the experiment on an ABC News broadcast in the 1990s, playing a B flat to a collection of gators at a roadside attraction in Florida and recording their bellows. Why B flat? So if a black hole hums, it hums at a frequency a million billion times lower than you can hear.A Song in B FlatWhile you may not be able to hear a black hole humming, this story is, to a considerable extent, sung. The vocalist (who is also the lyricist, and a journalist) is Josh Kurz of Los Angeles.

The answer is true to the following statements:1. When Rex picked me up for our first official date, I wore a pleated skirt, a coat from 1960, vintage cat eye glasses and sported bright red hair (that I maintained to the tune of 100.00/month - ahhhhh, the days of wine and vanity).2. Rex had his hair parted to the side, a unibrow, tight 501 jeans, a long sleeve shirt buttoned to his wrists and proceeded to wear bright green pants with a red turtleneck to a Xmas eve dinner later on that year. That would be his last time doing that.3. I went from show to show, always paying rent, but somehow not having a lot left over at the end of the month. I lived in a magical apartment overlooking a nursery school. I used to drink coffee on the porch and throw Hawaiian parties in the driveway where lots of people got layed.4. Rex lived at his parent’s house until he was 24 so that he could afford the down payment to his first condo. (One that I bitched about for two years due to the location. I still feel bad about that as it provided us the down payment for a home I love even more than my second floor apartment.)5. My idea of a day off is sleeping in, eating too much, over scheduling and under accomplishing.6. Rex’s idea of a day off is getting up early, drinking a healthy glass of milk with some fruit, mulching a tree and prepping a 72 page document for some hoity toity CFO doo hicky type person. If someone asked us if we knew of all these differences before we got married, we could only answer I do.This leads me to today’s stranger post. It involves a woman we saw at Old Town San Diego last night. We were all seated at a table with family and old friends in an authentic Mexican restaurant. Mariachi music was in perfect harmony with the summer evening and fish bowl margaritas. While Stink was too busy with his new coloring book, Pipsqueak clapped her hands while a white haired lady danced and danced to the horns. I thought she was part of the act, but turns out she was a patron just drunk off her rocker. (One could say drunk off her rocking chair.)While Rex chatted up my friend’s husband, I stopped the old lady in front of a water fountain and complimented her skills. She looked at me and said, Im too old to care what anyone else thinks.”I wonder what she was like at 29 - the year I met Rex. Was she always this free spirited, or was it something that she learned? In any case, it reminded me to find some of my old photos (like the one above, taken in 1999) and get inspired to funk-di-fy myself a bit more. I might not have the cat glasses anymore, but theres a lot of meow left in this ol tiger. Hell, I need something to embarrass my kids with. What about you? Got any tricks from yester year that its time to display again?

Airwaves and news pages were quickly filled with talk of outrage from the left, criticism from the left, and how the commutation will further drive the left crazy. It’s positively Pavlovian. So unless the left has recently had an incredible growth spurt, a lot of people on the so-called right are feeling outraged too.Is it really that hard for the media to address this issue without the left/right crutch?

-ne This entire hullabaloo about the failed bombings at Glasgow and Indian muslims being implicated in the United Kingdom for the first time in connection with terror activities got me thinking yet again. All this while most of the public was under the misconception that only poor muslim youth take a recourse to such anti social activities ranging from suicide attacks to bombings as it is their way of attaining martyrdom[incidentally I read somewhere that Islam says such martyrs have 72 virgins waiting for them at the gates of heaven which reminded me of this post by Evil Spock :)] and after their death their families are given a lump some amount of money by the terrorist outfit they had been a part of. George Bush the self proclaimed Big Daddy of the world and his faithful battery of followers take personal pleasure in inculcating the fear of Islam in the western world. We shouldn’t blame Islam for all these mishaps, it is our own making, the fact that we did not raise our voices against all the injustices at the right time , the fact that America chose to bring Bush back to power even after the disaster in Iraq, the fact that we continue to be oblivious of what the true message in the Quran and very conveniently blame the religion for fostering terrorism.

It appears that the attack took place in two firings, two hours apart. 8 years after Columbine, after the snipers in DC, after the clocktower, today…well, what more can be said? There’s a lot to be said. As I’ve been busy looking at the news, mostly of a trivial nature to satisfy my mean streak, it has become abundantly clear that media outlets, big and small, are clouded over. What perspectives can I form that haven’t been manipulated and taken into account in advance? It’s not a rant or a manifesto or a sermon, but a personal reiteration that I’ve decided to let open because I know it’s not an uncommon thought. If enough people at this same moment share similar fleeting thoughts, then I’m secure in the notion that things aren’t as askew as I thought when I first started.

Array 21 After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; 23 Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me 24 and said: Do not be afraid, Paul. Apostle Paul alone among them remained perfectly calm, and by his word from Jehovah God the rest were reassured. Apostle Paul of the Bible was the only man who had courage enough to say: So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as He told me.  Apostle Paul had a friend named Jesus who kept Paul’s courage up.  What that presence brings in heart cheer those remember who, like Paul, have had the angel of Jehovah God standing by them in a night of storm, when anchors would no longer hold, and rocks were dangerously close, Jesus was even closer.

So yesterday I was in a complete and total funk the entire day. She noticed…and asked what was bothering me. It was hard to tell her though because in reality, even though I said I would fall back, I really don’t want to. I want to be a part of her life…and I want her in mine.I talked to a friend about the situation - someone not a part of the board to keep down the potential drama - and she gave me some very good advice. She said, Look, what did you tell me you were gonna do when you broke up with your last girl? You said you were gonna chill by yourself for a little while. Whats wrong with doing that?” And I realize that shes right. That doesnt necessarily mean that Im backing up…Im not really. But I will step back for a while and allow her the healing time she needs…and deserves. Theres no reason for us to jump into a relationship. Right now, Ill be the friend she needs and be there for her when shes hurting…and when shes smiling. I believe her when she says that she wants to be with me. But I realize that certain people do tend to have holds on us even when theyre no longer part of our lives. I understand that…and respect it. Ill be here waiting and doing my own healing in the meantime. I guess this is the “taking it slow” that weve been talking about. When shes ready, we can together make this a love to be envied…until then, well just…Be.
